The Successful Businessman and the Street Sweeper
There was once a very successful businessman named Jack. He had made his fortune through smart investments and clever deals, and he loved to flaunt his wealth. He would often drive his luxury car to work, wearing his designer suits and expensive watches.
One day, as Jack was walking to a meeting, he noticed a street sweeper working on the sidewalk. The sweeper, whose name was Alex, was diligently sweeping the street, making sure it was clean and tidy. Jack couldn’t help but notice the contrast between his own success and Alex’s humble job.
Feeling superior, Jack approached Alex and said, “You know, I used to be just like you. But I worked hard, and now I’m a successful businessman. I make more money in one day than you probably make in a month.”
Alex looked up at Jack and smiled. “That may be true, sir,” he said, “but I take pride in my work. I make sure the streets are clean and safe for everyone to walk on. And at the end of the day, I go home feeling satisfied, knowing that I’ve done my job well.”
Jack scoffed at Alex’s response. “That’s not very ambitious of you,” he said. “Don’t you want to be more than just a street sweeper?”
Alex looked at Jack with a twinkle in his eye. “Sir, I may not be a wealthy businessman like you, but I’m happy with my life. And I’ve learned that true happiness comes not from how much money you make, but from the positive impact you have on the world around you.”
Jack was taken aback by Alex’s words. He realized that he had been so focused on his own success that he had forgotten the value of humility and kindness. He thanked Alex for the lesson and continued on his way to the meeting, feeling a little wiser and more humble.
From that day on, Jack made a conscious effort to be more humble and appreciative of the people around him, regardless of their profession or social status. And as he did, he found that his relationships with others improved, and he felt a sense of fulfillment that he had never experienced before.
The story of Jack and Alex teaches us that humility is not about being poor or unsuccessful, but about being kind, compassionate, and appreciative of the people and the world around us.
